Therefore, when you compute the percentages of the isotopes of H in any container, you find that the atomic mass of H is actually 1.0079. Because H-2 has one proton and one neutron, its mass is 2. For example, the element cobalt (Co) has an atomic number of 27. This atomic number is equal to the number of protons in the nucleus of that particular atom.
